Bodoni in Japan

Book / Identity

Bodoni in Japan is a fictional typographic exchange and exhibition.

A request of Tokugawa Ienari, (shōgun of the Tokugawa shogunate of Japan) to Giambattista Bodoni in 1800, asking him to introduce the first Western typeface in Japan. How Japanese people at that time would use Bodoni’s letters ? A book that shows the use of Bodoni’s typeface in Japanese Edo period’s artefacts.

I imagined a fictional exhibition organised by the Moma (NYC) on this historical event. The result is an identity based on the blend between Japanese Edo period’s visual language and Bodoni’s typeface.
